This weekend we hosted a Self Care and Advocacy Workshop at Girl Scouts, for women and girls ages 14 and older. We were excited to put on this event in partnership with the Pacers!
After eating breakfast, speaker Krystal Ardayfio gave an interactive presentation about stress management and self care, and then the audience broke up into two groups– a middle school/ high school group, and a group of adults. There, they reflected on their own stressors and methods of self care, and engaged in activities that encouraged self acceptance.
Krystal spoke about stress in a way that was relevant to both the teenagers and the adults in the room. We all experience stress– both good and bad kinds. Some of the middle schoolers in the room talked about the stress of school, problems with friends, and not fitting in. Adults discussed the stress of single parenting, financial struggles, and keeping the house clean.
Regardless of what is causing you stress, there are a few go-to ways to approach it in a healthy way. First, Krystal emphasized prioritizing your stressors. There are always some things that are more important than others, and those need to be done first. When you’ve completed the most important things, you’ll feel better. The less important things can fill in the cracks.
She also recommended approaching one task at a time so you don’t get overwhelmed. When you break a giant stresser into small steps to combat it, it may not seem as scary.
Lastly, she asked the audience: “who is your person?” Who do you call when you’re overwhelmed and you feel like you can’t handle it anymore?
Everyone needs a “person,” Krystal said. It’s equally important for children and teenagers as it is for adults. “The single most common factor for children who develop resilience is that they had a supportive and stable relationship with a parent, guardian, or adult,” she said.
Whether you’re a teenager or an adult, having a support system helps you believe in yourself and stay on track when life becomes stressful.
